“I’m Roland, Roland Wright, one of Oliver Wright’s sons. You know, Wright Armor?”

“Ahhhh! So you are,” said Sir Gallawood in a much more gentle manner.

He took his hand off his sword. “Wright Armor,” Sir Gallawood repeated, laughing loudly and giving Roland a friendly punch in the chest. The punch hit with an almighty thwoomp and although it missed Nudge by a hair’s breadth, it almost bounced him out of Roland’s shirt pocket. His headache was now even worse.

“I didn’t recognize you, young Roland, with such a red face and so much sweat in your hair. So what can I do for you?”

“I’ve run all the way from the village, Sir Gallawood,” Roland said, speaking so fast between breaths that Sir Gallawood had to squint his eyes and cup his hands behind his ears to work out what was being said. “I had to find you, Sir Gallawood. I’m in a contest tomorrow. Remember yesterday when we were told the King was taking one of my father’s sons into his household. Well, my father is to choose which of us will make the better knight, and I’m going to fight in the contest just like you fight.”

“Oh, I see,” said Sir Gallawood as he planted another friendly punch on Roland’s shoulder and kept walking. “We need to have a talk, then.”

Once again, Sir Gallawood’s friendly punch had almost flattened Roland. Nudge, meanwhile, was quickly losing the will to live.

“So, young man,” Sir Gallawood said as his long legs carried him along the rough dirt track so quickly that Roland had to jog to keep up. “What do you think you need to know before this contest?”

“Well, I need to know how to bash and crash and stab and slice and dice and pound,” replied Roland, still rubbing his shoulder. “And I need to know how to smite people. All the great knights smite their enemies, so I need to know how to do that as well.”

“Hmmm,” said Sir Gallawood thoughtfully. “Being a knight, Master Roland, isn’t only about fighting. Your father is a very clever man and I’m sure he knows that. So you’ll have to show all the other knightly virtues in the contest. I trust you’ll be judged on such things as honor, loyalty, good manners and chivalry.”

“Oh,” said Roland, still panting and jogging and rubbing his shoulder. “I hadn’t thought of that.”

“And if I may offer another small piece of advice,” Sir Gallawood said, smoothing his pointy black beard.
